Frank Russo is Professor of Psychology and the Hear the World Research Chair in Music and Emotional Speech at Ryerson University. He is also the Founding Director of the SMART Lab, a Professor in the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, and an Affiliate Scientist at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. His prior appointments include the University of Toronto (Research Professor, Centre for Biological Communication Systems) and ETH Zurich (Visiting Professor, Health Technology). His basic research uses tools of psychology and neuroscience to study cognitive processes underlying music, speech, and nonverbal communication. His applied research focuses on the advancement of technology and music-based interventions to achieve communicative and prosocial gains. His philosophical approach to these questions tends to be embodied — i.e., a focus on the body and its sensorimotor interaction with the physical and social world. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers. He is also deeply committed to the translation of research findings through creative collaborations with artists, teachers, community-based groups, and industry. He has received Early Career Awards from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation, the Canadian Society for Brain Behaviour and Cognitive Science, and the International Congress of Acoustics. In 2013 he became a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association.
